The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced early today that it was extending the already-extended Dec. 23 deadline for healtha insurance policies starting Jan. 1, 2014, by one more day.

In a statement, Julie Bataille, director of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' Office of Communications, said, "We recognize that many have chosen to make their final decisions on today's deadline and we are committed to making sure they can do so."

"Anticipating high demand and the fact that consumers may be enrolling from multiple time zones, we have taken steps to make sure that those who select a plan through tomorrow will get coverage for Jan 1," she said.

The new deadline is thus midnight tomorrow, Dec. 24.
