In 2011 the Department of Labor (DOL) plans to issue 35 proposed rules and 25 final rules. Many of these will be emanating from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and will be focusing on workplace safety issues.
Details are contained in the department’s Semiannual Regulatory Agenda, which it published just this past Friday (Dec. 17, 2010).
OSHA will be releasing final regulations on musculoskeletal disorders, confined work spaces in construction, and electric power transmission and distribution, among other workplace issues. The agency will also roll out proposed rules on combustible dust and occupational exposure to crystalline silica.
Of most pressing concern would be OSHA’s new requirement that each business create, maintain and follow an injury and illness preventiony plan. The rule would include planning, implementing, evaluating and improving processes and activities that protect employee safety and health. Stakeholder meetings on the initiative have already begun.
