The federal Obamacare marketplace, HealthCare.gov, today launched a transgender page, offering both application assistance and health-care rights explanations.

On the application front, it advises transgender persons to use the names that appear on their Social Security card to avoid triggering “inconsistencies” or “data matching issues” error messages that prevent completion of their sign-up.

On the health-care front, it warns that many plans still deny services other than preventive services (which are mandated) by using exclusions such as “services related to sex change” or “sex reassignment surgery.” The page advises when reading the plan’s explanation of coverage:

Look for language like ‘All procedures related to being transgender are not covered.’ Other terms to look for include ‘gender change,’ ‘transsexualism,’ ‘gender identity disorder,’ and ‘gender identity dysphoria.’
